If you ever land in Kathmandu valley Nepal, you will always be welcomed with a Newari cuisine in hotels and restaurants. The Newari food has been developed over the centuries among the Newars of the valley. Newars being the natives of the valley, they have been cultivating this rich and fertile land for many generations. The food consists of over 200 varieties, each with magical flavours that you cannot find anywhere else.

Newari food is influenced by south-east Asian spices like cinnamon, cumin, turmeric, pepper, chillies, garlic, ginger mustard oil and seeds. These spices with a unique cooking style produce intense flavours in the dishes. Newari communities are also famous for its elaborate festivals called “Jatras”. These Jatras are never dull with the Newari food and drinks.

Newari people inhabited the Kathmandu valley and the surrounding area in Nepal since 1200 CE. They have developed a sophisticated civilisation not seen anywhere in Nepal. They have old-aged traditions and culture they are very proud of and even practice today. Apart from the rich culture, they are renowned for art, literature, trade and agriculture. They speak a unique Newari language which does not resemble any other locally spoken languages in Nepal. The festivals and the feast are very important to their culture, hence have great food and flavours in their cuisine.
